The NFL owners are making one last attempt to salvage their 2011 free agents after their original proposal of a new collective bargaining agreement went south. After their hope for a right-of-first-refusal policy for this year’s unique free agent class was trashed during CBA negotiations, NFL owners will be scrambling to keep their key free agents during this lockout-shortened off season. The Dallas Cowboys are a prime example of a team that may very well lose a key player to free agency now that team will have 72 hours to re-sign unrestricted free agents once the lockout ends. Dallas Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has thrived on free agency since he bought the team in 1989. Time and again, Jones has signed high-profile free agents hoping to immediately send the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl. The NFL lockout is delaying the start of free agency this offseason and the Cowboys could very likely lose several key players to that open market with little time to sign replacements. Lockout Backfires on Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones, NFL Owners

Dallas Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones was a primary reason the NFL lockout actually happened. Jones tried to initiate a walkout of the ten owners on the NFL’s executive committee when the NFL Players Association members didn’t bow down to him. Now the two sides are getting closer to an agreement after over 100 days of labor stoppage and Jones and the owners have lost a critical battle in this negotiation war. Like many teams, Jones’ Cowboys may lose very valuable players to free agency that they wouldn’t have without the lockout. (more…)

Dallas Cowboys Could Lose Key Free Agents Under New NFL CBA

The Dallas Cowboys are now in even more of a predicament regarding free agents this offseason. When the NFL lockout ends and the offseason officially begins, the Cowboys will be facing four key free agents who now have a lot more freedom. According to leaked details of the new NFL collective bargaining agreement, players will now be unrestricted free agents after only four years of service rather than six as mandated by the old CBA. That means the Cowboys will have a much harder time resigning left tackle Doug Free, receiver Sam Hurd and defensive ends Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen. (more…)

Dallas Cowboys Should Keep Tyron Smith at Right Tackle

The Dallas Cowboys finally drafted a player at the position of most need for the first time in a long time this year. With the No. 9 overall pick of the NFL Draft of April 28, the Cowboys took USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith. Smith was a solid right tackle at the NFL player factory known as Southern California and the Cowboys are in need at that position. However, there is speculation around Valley Ranch that Smith might start at left tackle and Doug Free would move to right tackle. That should not happen. (more…)
