So much for Cowboys’ first-round draft pick Dez Bryant being cleared to play. Team owner Jerry Jones said on Wednesday’s kickoff luncheon the rookie’s long-awaited debut will have to wait until September 12. Head coach Wade Phillips said earlier in the week that his starters would play in Dallas’ final preseason game against Miami on Thursday, but has since said only some of the first unit will see the field. Jones has said all along that Bryant will not play in an exhibition unless it is with the Cowboys’ first-team offense. Much to the dismay of the Cowboys’ faithful, the first glimpse of Bryant in a game uniform will come in the regular season opener at Washington. (more…)
McGee to Start Against Dolphins; Some Cowboys Starters Will Play

Well everyone knew Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips might be bluffing when he said he would play his starters in the final preseason game against Miami on Thursday. It turns out he was half bluffing as he told the media on Tuesday that some starters would play, but third-string quarterback Stephen McGee would start at quarterback for Dallas. That means starting signal-caller Tony Romo will not play in the team’s last exhibition before the regular season begins on September 12. Phillips told the Dallas Morning News that some starters would play against the Dolphins, but of course he did not say which ones. From Phillips’ wording, McGee will play the entire game at quarterback, just like Romo did in 2006 when he eventually took over for Drew Bledsoe halfway through the season. Of course, everyone is mostly interested in the status of first-round draft pick Dez Bryant. (more…)

If Dallas head coach Wade Phillips sticks to his word and plays his starters in the preseason finale against Miami, he will have four of them back from injury. First-round draft pick Dez Bryant, safety Gerald Sensabuagh, linebacker Keith Brooking, and defensive end Marcus Spears will all be at practice on Tuesday and will play against the Dolphins on Thursday night if Phillips chooses to extend the dress rehearsal for the regular season opener. That experience would be vital for Bryant, who has yet to make his professional debut. However, that appearance could jeopardize the health of all four players, something Phillips must mull over before kickoff on Thursday night at Cowboys Stadium. (more…)

Add one more weapon to the Cowboys offense for Thursday’s preseason finale against Miami. Although the Dallas usual weapons did not perform well against Houston on Saturday, first-round draft pick Dez Bryant has been cleared to play in the final exhibition when the Dolphins come to town. After suffering a high ankle sprain during training camp on July 30, Bryant has healed faster than anticipated and has already been running routes and cutting on that sprained ankle. The twenty-fourth overall pick will begin practice on Monday and will make his professional debut on Thursday night against Miami. (more…)
Cowboys Will Play Starters in Preseason Finale Against Dolphins

Most NFL teams typically use their third preseason game as a dress rehearsal and rest their starters during their final exhibition. Since the Cowboys will play an extra meaningless contest this year, the fourth preseason game was supposed to be that dress rehearsal for the regular season. However, due to the Cowboys’ poor play in their exhibition against Houston on Saturday, head coach Wade Phillips is mulling over something he wouldn’t have dreamed of doing had his team played better. It’s something you and I thought of about midway through the second quarter of the Cowboys’ preseason loss to the Texans – play the starters in that finale preseason game for a dress rehearsal do-over.
