Tyron Smith Agrees to Rookie Contract With Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have solidified the offensive line by singing first-round draft pick Tyron Smith to a four-year, $12.5 million deal on Thursday. Smith can now begin practicing with the Cowboys during the team’s training at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Smith’s drafting and now signing with Dallas all but ensures the release of veteran right tackle Marc Colombo. Cowboys team owner and general manager said Smith is “already penciled in as the starter” anyway.

Dallas Cowboys Lose DE Stephen Bowen to Washington Redskins Via Free Agency

The Dallas Cowboys’ goal of solidifying the defensive end position just got tougher. Free agent Stephen Bowen agreed to a five-year, $27 million deal with the Washington Redskins on Thursday. Bowen started the last eight games of the 2010 season for Dallas, recording 12 quarterback pressures and four tackles for loss. Bowen was expected to start this season in new Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s complex 3-4 scheme. Now Dallas must hope to re-sign free agent defensive end Jason Hatcher to have enough veteran players to fill the roster at defensive end.

Dallas Cowboys, San Diego Chargers Planning to Practice Together During Preseason

ESPN’s Todd Archer reported on Wednesday the Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers are discussing plans to practice together the week leading up to their preseason game on Aug. 21. Following the cancellation of the Hall of Fame game due to lengthened NFL labor talks, NBC decided to broadcast the Cowboys’ exhibition against the Chargers during primetime. To do this, the game had to be pushed back a couple of days and now it appears both Dallas and San Diego will take advantage of the extra time by practicing together.

Dallas Cowboys to Release RT Marc Colombo

Amidst all the veteran cuts by the Dallas Cowboys, it was originally believed the team would try to keep right tackle Marc Colombo and restructure his contract. Colombo is scheduled to make $1.9 million in 2011, but first-round draft pick Tyron Smith has “already been penciled in as the starter” according to Dallas team owner and general manager Jerry Jones. Sources say the Cowboys have already given up trying to negotiate a pay cut with Colombo and the veteran will likely be released.

Jason Garrett Promises Tough Training Camp for Dallas Cowboys

Despite rules in the new NFL collective bargaining agreement, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett plans to work his team hard during this short training camp. The new deal prohibits teams from conducting two-a-day practices as was the tradition for previous decades. Now the Cowboys will conduct walkthroughs in the mornings and a single practice in the afternoons of each day of training camp. Garrett says that won’t keep him from working his team into shape in a short amount of time.

“If you look at those rules, in general, we never exceeded any of that,” Garrett said. “Now we just have to structure the practices differently. The way we’ll do it is we’ll have shorter walkthroughs, about an hour each day, and a little bit longer practices, getting close to those three hours. In the past we balanced it up a little more and these are the new rules and we’ll make them work.”

The Cowboys began camp inside the Alamodome in San Antonio on Wednesday, so the team must practice without pads through Friday due to rules of the new CBA. On Saturday, the Cowboys will practice in pads for the first time in 2011. On Thursday, Garrett assured the media his team would be very physical this season despite the shortened practice time in pads.

“You’re allowed to practice in full pads and we feel like it’s very important to do that,” Garrett said. “This is the time of year where you lay the foundation for the physical-ness of your football team, and we’ll do that.”

Kyle Kosier Agrees to New Deal With Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to terms with left guard Kyle Kosier, solidifying that side of the offensive line after re-signing left tackle Doug Free a day earlier. Kosier has been the Cowboys’ starter at left guard since 2006, but was hobbled by injury last season. Kosier played exceptionally well alongside Free in Free’s first season as a starter and Dallas head coach Jason Garrett says he thinks the two will continue to improve as they go forward with their new contracts. Kosier agreed to a three-year deal worth approximately $9 million.

The Dallas Cowboys almost got out a usual headache with Washington Redskins free agent receiver Santana Moss. No matter how good or bad the Redskins are each season, Moss finds some way to torch Dallas for a season-best game each year. Dallas hoped the Redskins’ pursuit of free agent receivers Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress would allow Moss to slip away to another team, but the speedy little wideout will continue to pester the Cowboys’ secondary for at least another three years.

Dallas Cowboys Miss Out; Quintin Mikell Signs With St. Louis Rams

The Dallas Cowboys can no longer sign former Philadelphia Eagles safety Quintin Mikell. The free agent defensive back agreed to terms with the St. Louis Rams on Tuesday, strengthening the defense of a team with an offense that is one solid receiver short of being a contender. The Cowboys had expressed interest in Mikell after Alan Ball failed to pan out following his move to safety from cornerback. Mikell played eight seasons in Philadelphia and is a one-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro.

Dallas Cowboys Negotiating New Contract With Kyle Kosier

The Dallas Cowboys have already anchored part of the left side of the team’s offensive line by re-signing left tackle Doug Free on Tuesday. Now Dallas is focused on bringing back left guard Kyle Kosier, who has been the team’s starter at the position since 2006. Kosier’s agent, Kenneth Zuckerman, has talked to other NFL teams, but has now turned his attention to re-signing his client with Dallas. Kosier is expected to agree to terms with the Cowboys on a new contract by the end of the weekend.

Dallas Cowboys Release Marion Barber, Roy Williams, Leonard Davis, Kris Brown

In an effort to get under the $120 million salary cap mandated by the new NFL collective bargaining agreement, the Dallas Cowboys have decided to release right guard Leonard Davis, receiver Roy Williams, running back Marion Barber and kicker Kris Brown. The Cowboys cleared roughly $16.6 million in cap space with these four moves that will become official on Thursday.

After four seasons in Dallas, the 32-year-old Davis will be released with hopes that Montrae Holland and/or Phil Costa can step in and take his place in the starting lineup. The Cowboys already agreed to terms with free agent left tackle Doug Free, so anchoring the offensive line will be complete once first-round draft pick Tyron Smith is signed.

Williams has been treading on thin ice in Dallas ever since he was brought in through a trade with the Detroit Lions. Now that Miles Austin has emerged as an elite NFL receiver and second-year pro Dez Bryant showed flashes of brilliance in 2010, Williams’ services and his hefty contract are no longer needed in Dallas.

Barber was once the workhorse of the Dallas backfield, but injuries and his hard running style slowed him in recent seasons. With the emergence of Felix Jones and Tashard Choice and the Cowboys’ drafting of DeMarco Murray in April, Barber knew his time in Dallas was up.

The release of Kris Brown proves Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is confident in David Buehler to handle the field goal kicking duties alone in 2011. Buehler was very inconsistent in his first season as an NFL field goal kicker, but made enough difficult attempts that Garrett believes he has the potential to become a reliable special teams weapon. However, Buehler will now have to compete with undrafted rookie kicker Dan Bailey, whom the Cowboys signed on Tuesday.
