In what might have been the most exciting preseason game in recent Cowboys history, several backup players, roster hopefuls, and the team’s new field goal kicker gave Dallas a 27-25 victory in their final preseason game over the Dolphins on Thursday. Third-string quarterback Stephen McGee started the game for the Cowboys in what was perhaps his final test to prove to head coach Wade Phillips that he deserves a roster spot for the 2010 season. The former Texas A&M Aggie played the entire exhibition, completing 27 of 42 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown. McGee also led the Cowboys on drives that concluded with field goals as the first and second halves expired. In addition, several members of the secondary solidified or lost their roster spots. The most notable was fourth-round pick Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, who made two tackles, intercepted a pass, and had some decent kick returns while starting at strong safety. (more…)

(Photo by Eliot J. Schechter/Getty Images) After everything that has happened this week, it’s fairly tough to preview the Cowboys’ last preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. We do know the starting quarterback will be third-stringer Stephen McGee, but it’s a toss-up after that. Since head coach Wade Phillips said some starters will play, but did not say which, we can only go by position battles for the basis of Dallas’ preseason finale. I will try desperately not to turn this into a strictly position battle article, but there’s not a lot riding on this game other than that. However, those who do and don’t make the final 53-man roster is a very important issue that will affect America’s Team for the entire regular season and perhaps beyond. (more…)

For the third straight preseason game, the Cowboys’ first-team defense looked in midseason form. The starting unit did not shut out the Chargers’ first offense, but they definitely held their own through nearly the entire first half. Rookies, seasoned veterans, and new acquisitions alike all showed why they are a part of the franchise in a 16-14 Dallas win on Saturday. The Cowboys’ defense created turnovers, recorded sacks, and showed resilience in the red zone; all big reasons why Dallas is ranked in top five units in the league. I’ll always mention that I don’t take much from preseason, but Boys fans have to like what they saw against a Chargers offense that is much more dynamic than Cincinnati or Oakland. (more…)

Two of the Cowboys’ 2010 draft picks played well in their preseason debuts in San Diego on Saturday. Second-round pick Sean Lee and fourth-rounder Akwasi Owusu-Ansah both made their professional debuts after missing the Cowboys’ first two preseason games due to injuries. Lee filled in for starting linebacker Keith Brooking, who left the game early with a shoulder strain. The Penn State product played like a starter with the first-team defense and like an All-Pro when the backups came into the game. Owusu-Ansah recorded a solo tackle as well as an assist while playing free safety with the second and third units. While returning kicks, the rookie defensive back looked rather explosive on a 45-yard punt return that was wiped out by an illegal block penalty. On the whole, both rookies shined in their first Cowboys action. (more…)

The Cowboys recorded another preseason win and everything looked smooth on both sides of the ball during their third exhibition at San Diego. The Cowboys scored a touchdown in the red zone, quieting all the “red zone woe” haters. Dallas held San Diego’s starting offense to less than 180 yards and only one touchdown through a majority of the first half. The stars played well and so did several young players who made big strides in their individual races for roster positions. Most importantly, both starting units played well against a Chargers team that beat them 20-17 last December, showing signs of improvement and further potential. (more…)
