McGee to Start Against Dolphins; Some Cowboys Starters Will Play
[picappgallerysingle id="9594168"]Well everyone knew Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips might be bluffing when he said he would play his starters in the final preseason game against Miami on Thursday. It turns out he was half bluffing as he told the media on Tuesday that some starters would play, but third-string quarterback Stephen McGee would start at quarterback for Dallas. That means starting signal-caller Tony Romo will not play in the team’s last exhibition before the regular season begins on September 12. Phillips told the Dallas Morning News that some starters would play against the Dolphins, but of course he did not say which ones. From Phillips’ wording, McGee will play the entire game at quarterback, just like Romo did in 2006 when he eventually took over for Drew Bledsoe halfway through the season. Of course, everyone is mostly interested in the status of first-round draft pick Dez Bryant. (more…)
4 Cowboys Starters Return to Practice
[picappgallerysingle id="7338377"]If Dallas head coach Wade Phillips sticks to his word and plays his starters in the preseason finale against Miami, he will have four of them back from injury. First-round draft pick Dez Bryant, safety Gerald Sensabuagh, linebacker Keith Brooking, and defensive end Marcus Spears will all be at practice on Tuesday and will play against the Dolphins on Thursday night if Phillips chooses to extend the dress rehearsal for the regular season opener. That experience would be vital for Bryant, who has yet to make his professional debut. However, that appearance could jeopardize the health of all four players, something Phillips must mull over before kickoff on Thursday night at Cowboys Stadium. (more…)
Cowboys Rookie Tackle Sam Young Out 3-6 Weeks With Sprained MCL
[picappgallerysingle id="9524525"]Another Cowboys draft pick suffered a semi-major injury during the preseason loss to Houston. Sixth-round draft pick Sam Young, an offensive tackle, sprained his MCL in the second half of Saturday’s exhibition and is expected to miss 3-6 weeks. After cutting Flozell Adams, the Cowboys drafted Young to add depth to their offensive line. Dallas is already faced with the challenge of cutting almost two dozen players in order to reach the regular season 53-man roster limit, so Young’s injury only complicates matters. The fact he was drafted automatically puts him ahead of undrafted players the Cowboys have signed this off-season, but this injury puts Young’s status in jeopardy. (more…)
Cowboys Cut Pat Watkins and 2 Others to Reach Roster Limit
[picappgallerysingle id="6063096"]You might be sad about the situation, but I’d say it’s about time the Cowboys cut safety Pat Watkins. Due to league rules, all NFL teams must trim their rosters from 80 to 75 players by Tuesday and then the final 53-man squad by Saturday. Thanks to the leniency of injured players, the Cowboys only had to cut three players, including Watkins. Tight end John Phillips tore his ACL in the Hall of Fame Game, so he’s out for the season. Instead of having to cut the budding talent, Dallas placed Phillips on injured reserve to clear up a roster spot and keep Phillips for the 2011 season. The Cowboys had already placed linebacker Stephen Hodge on the physically-unable-to-perform-list, so he will remain there to open a second roster spot. However, Watkins and two undrafted rookies got the boot on Monday to put the Dallas roster at the league-mandated 75-man limit. (more…)
Dez Bryant Cleared to Play in Preseason Finale for Cowboys
[picappgallerysingle id="9572946"]Add one more weapon to the Cowboys offense for Thursday’s preseason finale against Miami. Although the Dallas usual weapons did not perform well against Houston on Saturday, first-round draft pick Dez Bryant has been cleared to play in the final exhibition when the Dolphins come to town. After suffering a high ankle sprain during training camp on July 30, Bryant has healed faster than anticipated and has already been running routes and cutting on that sprained ankle. The twenty-fourth overall pick will begin practice on Monday and will make his professional debut on Thursday night against Miami. (more…)
